Loughborough - Local organising committee

Dear colleagues,

It is our privilege to invite you to Loughborough, UK for Shiftwork 2027. This is the second time in the meeting’s history that the symposium will be in the UK, where we last hosted in Sheffield 1991. We also look forward to welcoming you to Europe for the first time since Denmark 2015.

For this meeting we would like to highlight the importance of embedding principles now for a sustainable future. We adopt this outlook in our call for scientific submissions but also in our approach to the meeting. The promotion and consideration of sustainability in all its forms is important to us. We recognise that this isn’t always feasible but where possible, we will look to consider sustainability in our decisions or offer sustainable options. We are strong advocates for fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment at this conference. We hope to create a space where all participants, regardless of background, or identity, feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute. We are committed to supporting those early in their career as we look to them to sustain the momentum of our research discipline for the future.

In hosting the symposium we seek to uphold the Rutenfranz Principles as such all delegates are encouraged to stay on site for the duration of the conference. Our Scientific Committee along with the WTS board will facilitate a high quality scientific programme including symposia, individual oral and poster presentation, interactive discussion sessions and three keynote speakers, one for each of the three key themes: safety, health and wellbeing and equality.

Loughborough is a market town located in the centre of the UK, in the industrial heartland of England, with good transport connections and is home of Loughborough University, renowned for its research and innovation. Importantly, the venue of Loughborough also promotes our key themes of the conference (safety, health and wellbeing, equality). Loughborough University is number one in the world for sport, encouraging healthy lifestyles and approaches to wellbeing. It is also the home of the Transport Safety Research Centre and has been for the past 40 years. The University also promotes a strong sustainability culture, embedding sustainability within everything they do to create a more sustainable planet for the future.
